Millau Viaduct Bridge Documentary - World's Most Tallest Bridge

Issues with website traffic on the path from Paris to Spain along the stretch passing via the Tarn valley near the town of Millau, throughout the summertime when the roads became congested with holiday traffic, needed building of a bridge to reach the valley. The very first strategies were reviewed in 1987 by CETE, and by October 1991, the choice was made to build a tall crossing of the Tarn River by a structure of around 2,500 m (8,200 ft). During 1995-- 1996, a second definition research study was made by five associated architect groups and structural engineers.

In July 1996, the jury decided in favour of a cable-stayed layout with a number of spans, as suggested by the Sogelerg consortium (Michel Virlogeux but Norman Foster). The choice to continue by grant of agreement was made in May 1998; after that in June 2000 the contest for the construction contract was launched, ready for 4 consortia. In March 2001 Eiffage developed the subsidiary Compagnie Eiffage du Viaduc de Millau (CEVM) as well as was proclaimed victor of the competition as well as granted the prime agreement in August.
